Sacher’s sweet secret

The Original Sacher-Torte

A stay in Vienna is hardly complete without a slice of the Original Sacher-Torte. Since 1832, it has stood for the highest level of Austrian craftsmanship and a living piece of history. Created by the 16-year-old Franz Sacher at the court of Prince Metternich, it quickly became a specialty of the house, delighting figures such as Empress Elisabeth as well as guests from around the world. To this day, only those cakes produced by Sacher may bear the name “Original”. Each Original Sacher-Torte is made according to the closely guarded original recipe, in exactly 34 precise steps by hand. At Café Sacher Vienna, it is traditionally served with unsweetened whipped cream, combining living tradition with the unique flair of the imperial city.
