Hotel Sacher Salzburg: History

On the banks of the River Salzach, as close as possible to the breathtaking City of Salzburg and next to the bridge, Staatsbrücke, the architect Carl Freiherr von Schwarz built an impressive hotel between 1863 and 1866 called the Österreichischer Hof. It did not take long for the hotel to become popular, due especially to its splendid location.

Already during the first years, its guests included members of royal families, statesmen, members of the high clergy as well as many artists. With the start of Salzburg Festival, the Österreichischer Hof immediately became its social centre. The event’s triumvirate, Max Reinhardt, Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Richard Strauss, and many performing artists were living side by side with the European and overseas high society. Today still, this exclusive luxury hotel continues to be a centre for all the socialites attending the Festival.

In 1988, the Gürtler family bought the famous hotel, thus starting a new era. All the rooms and restaurants were renovated with a great deal of regard for their historical heritage. The rooms and suites were adorned with unique works of art while special attention was given to the colour of the interiors. Despite all the changes, the charming traditional atmosphere of the hotel has remained intact.

The Hotel Sacher Salzburg unites all the advantages of a 5-star deluxe hotel: its exclusive interiors, its tradition and atmosphere, its marvellous location on the banks of the River Salzach with its fantastic view over Salzburg’s Old Town, the fortress, as well as over the spires and gardens of this enchanting festival city.
