Sacher Artists' Collection 2020 by Karel Appel

The famous wooden box of the Sacher Artists’ Collection 2020 is decorated with the motif Visage-Paysage no. 9 by Dutch artist Karel Appel. Appel was co-founder of the avant-garde artist group CoBrA, whose work stands for an experimental, gestural painting style and free use of bright colors. His extensive oeuvre of paintings, drawings and three-dimensional works is exhibited in the most important international museums.

All the proceeds from the Sacher Artists’ Collection 2020 will go to the Department of Pediatrics at the Favoriten Clinic to enable the purchase of two computer-supported training and rehabilitation devices. These are designed to help regain or improve lost function in the arms and hands. The latest technologies such as robotics, sensor technology, virtual reality and gamification are used to playfully maintain the children’s motivation and stamina, even over longer rehabilitation periods.

Amazing art and Austria’s most famous cake, united for a good cause? That was Elisabeth Gürtler’s vision in 2009 when she launched the Sacher Artists’ Collection, and the idea was a recipe for success from the start. Every year since, a renowned artist has transformed the iconic wooden box in which the Original Sacher-Torte is packaged into a unique work of art. All proceeds from this limited edition are donated to specially selected charity projects.
