A COLLECTOR'S PIECE FOR A GOOD CAUSE

The design of this year’s Artists’ Collection comes from the internationally renowned artist, graphic artist and sculptor Georg Baselitz. As early as the end of the 1960s, he made the groundbreaking decision to turn his pictorial motifs upside down. In doing so, he deprived the representation of its meaning, leaving it pure painting. This also applies to this year’s Artists’ Collection of the Original Sacher-Torte. Baselitz repeatedly devotes himself to the motif of the eagle, a theme that already appears in his early works. Yet the artist is never concerned with the eagle as a symbol or even a political statement. Rather, the eagle is part of memories and myths, a motif that imposes itself on the viewer with all its symbolic power, which Georg Baselitz immediately denies.

The total proceeds of the Artists’ Collection 2023 by Georg Baselitz, amounting 70,000 euros, will benefit the “Young Music” project of the International Society for New Music in cooperation with the music schools of the City of Vienna. The project promotes young people with the aim of bringing them closer to contemporary music.

Amazing art and Austria’s most famous cake, united for a good cause? That was Elisabeth Gürtler’s vision in 2009 when she launched the Sacher Artists’ Collection, and the idea was a recipe for success from the start. Every year since, a renowned artist has transformed the iconic wooden box in which the Original Sacher-Torte is packaged into a unique work of art. All proceeds from this limited edition are donated to specially selected charity projects.
