The Sacher Corporation has been run by the Gürtler family since 1934, when the family took over Hotel Sacher Vienna. It is one of the very few privately owned five-star luxury hotels left in the world and is now run by a family team: Elisabeth Gürtler, her children Alexandra Winkler and Georg Gürtler. They are passionate about maintaining the tradition of the world-famous hotel and the Sacher business and giving their guests the quality, style and comfort that is synonymous with the Sacher name.
Hotel Sacher Wien was first established on Philharmonikerstrasse in 1876 by Eduard Sacher, son of Franz Sacher, the creator of the already famous Original Sacher-Torte. In 1892, Eduard died from an illness and his 33-year old wife Anna Sacher took over the hotel and set about establishing its reputation. “I am the Master in the house,” she said. She loved cigars and little dogs and ran the hotel with passion, flair and attentiveness to her guests up until her death in 1930. Hans Gürtler took over the hotel soon after in 1934 and it has remained in the same hands ever since.
The Sacher has been a popular meeting point for many famous people including Indira Gandhi, Queen Elizabeth II and John F. Kennedy. Artists and musicians, such as Leonard Bernstein, Herbert von Karajan and Marcel Prawy have also been frequent guests.
