The Sacher Family

The Sacher Family

The Sacher hotels and cafés have been managed by the Gürtler family since 1934, since 1990 by Elisabeth Gürtler. Both hotels are two of only a few privately owned 5 star luxury hotels worldwide.
As of 2014 the next generation has been responsible for the performance of the company. Georg Gürtler, Alexandra and Matthias Winkler as well as the whole Sacher team grant their guests highest quality, passion, an international flair and the level of excellence, which is inextricably linked with the name „Sacher“.

A piece of Vienna

It all began back in 1832: Franz Sacher created the Original Sacher-Torte, which from then on has become world famous and is still traditionally manufactured according to his secret recipe.
In 1876, his son Eduard opened the Hotel Sacher Wien in Vienna’s first district. Only a few years later, in 1892, at the age of 23 his wife Anna took over its management and influenced the „Sacher“ like nobody else. Not questioning her leadership, she’s quoted: “The master of the house, that’s me!”. Moreover she became famous for her faible of zigars and the French Bulldogs, that permanently accompanied her.
With great passion, providing a unique flair and special attention to her guests, she managed the hotel until her death in 1930. She was succeeded by a smart attorney, who took over the “Sacher” in 1934 and led it into a new era: as of this day the best hotel in town has been owned by the families Gürtler and Winkler.
