Music and culture in Salzburg: More than just a festival
The music and cultural repertoire of the city of Salzburg is mainly associated with the Salzburg Festival, Salzburg does, however, have a wide range of first-class events all the year round.
“Osterfestspiele” Salzburg Easter Festival
The Salzburg Easter Festival was founded in 1967 by the conducting legend Herbert von Karajan. It is a fixed date in the Austrian cultural calendar, the crowning glory of which is the operatic production performed by the Berlin Philharmonic and world-famous opera singers.
“Pfingstfestspiele” Salzburg Whitsun Festival
The Salzburg Whitsun Festival is a series of concerts offered as a small counterpart to the Salzburg Easter Festival. In addition to chamber and church music, particular emphasis is placed upon baroque pieces.
“Salzburger Festspiele” – The Salzburg Festival
Founded by Richard Wagner, Max Reinhart and Hugo von Hofmannsthal in the year 1926, the Salzburg Festival has been one of the most important festivals of classical music in the world ever since its founding. The acknowledged aim of the festival is to present opera, theatre and concerts at the highest level possible. The festival is the musical highlight of the year in Salzburg and delights the whole city from the end of July to the end of August.
“Salzburger Jazzherbst” Autumn Jazz Festival

“Salzburger Adventsingen” Advent Concert
The Salzburg Advent Concert was founded in 1946 by Tobias Reiser. The story of the nativity is related in local dialects for an audience of around 40,000 and takes place in the “Großes Festspielhaus” Great Festival Hall every year.

Also beyond the Festival, there is a wide range in Salzburg for guests interested in culture. The list ranges from productions in the “Landestheater” Theatre, directly next to the Hotel Sacher, the “Mozarteum” Orchestra and the Bach Choir to small intimate concerts in the “Festung” Fortress or in the “Schloss Mirabell” Castle.
